What are the SAT Subject Tests?

SAT Subject Tests are an important component of the college admissions process.  Through our one-on-one coaching utilizing the SP Method™, your child will understand the Strategies and Problem-solving techniques he or she needs SAT Subject Tests are one-hour multiple-choice tests that, like the SAT®, are designed to assess your child’s academic readiness for college. SAT Subject Tests focus on very specific subject areas.

Subject Tests display your child’s knowledge and ability to apply that knowledge. By showcasing these skills, SAT Subject Tests offer students an opportunity to differentiate themselves in the college admission process.

Colleges can use SAT Subject Test scores to help them:

  • Make admission decisions.
  • Determine how well prepared your child is for different college programs.
  • Place your child in appropriate-level courses.
  • Advise your child on subject course selection.

SAT Subject Tests fall into five general subject areas:

  • English: Literature
  • History: United States History, World History
  • Mathematics: Mathematics Level 1 and Mathematics Level 2
  • Science: Biology E/M, Chemistry, Physics
  • Languages: Chinese with Listening, French, French with Listening, German, German with Listening, Modern Hebrew, Italian, Japanese with Listening, Korean with Listening, Latin, Spanish, Spanish with Listening

Subjects Covered

The Mathematics Level 1 subject test is designed to assess your child’s understanding of common topics of college-preparatory Math, including two years of algebra and one year of geometry. A scientific or graphing calculator is required, and your child is expected to know how to use one. The test is one-hour in length and consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. The topics tested as well as their approximate percentage of the test are shown in the following table.

The Mathematics Level 2 subject test is designed for students who have taken college-preparatory Math for more than three years, including two years of algebra, one year of geometry, and pre-calculus and/or trigonometry. A scientific or graphing calculator is required and may provide an advantage over a scientific calculator for some questions. However, your child is not expected to use a calculator for every question. The test is one-hour in length and consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. The topics tested as well as their approximate percentage of the test are shown in the following table.

Description & Rates

SAT Subject Tests are an important component of the college admissions process.  SAT Subject Tests preparation sessions are one-on-one sessions tailored to your child’s needs. This high level of interaction allows MathSP expert coaches to uncover your child’s weaknesses and create a structured curriculum that focuses on an individualized approach to facilitate his/her improvement. Our coaches closely monitor the student’s progress from session to session to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. A flexible, customized curriculum allows your child to move at a comfortable pace while also meeting your child’s goals within the given timeframe.

  • Homework assignments arranged by concept assigned each session
  • Homework review each session to evaluate student progress
  • Real practice test to simulate a realistic testing environment and to track improvement
  • Timed practice SAT Subject Test sections each coaching session

Sessions are scheduled any day of the week or weekend.  Each session is usually 2 or 3 hours depending on your child’s academic needs as well as the time frame available before the test date.
